MUMPS - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia Some attempted to defuse the issue by referring to the language as MUMPS, square brackets being Walters, Richard (1997) M programming A Comprehensive Guide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUMPS_programming_language
Extractions: (Redirected from MUMPS programming language MUMPS , or simply M , is a programming language dedicated to building and managing databases . Whereas in most systems the database is the first-class citizen and a language is added on top, under M this is inverted, the language itself is the primary object, the database a "side effect" of one of the features of the language. M contrasts strongly with most database systems, because the system is much "lower level". For instance, whereas most database systems will include a command to find all the records matching a particular pattern, on an M system you would have to write a program to do this search and collect up the results. As you might imagine, this makes even trivial tasks much more difficult, and has led to a number of M-based programs to act as a database management system and provide these features. For people used to traditional database applications or database management systems, M can be difficult to understand at first. This is offset by its speed and flexibility in dealing with tasks that would cause problems under the relational database model. M has been called

Extractions: It's both. The DBMS can be used "stand-alone", without programmer intervention. But the various components (Input, Deleting, Lookup, Listing, etc.) are also accessible as M[UMPS] routines. The programmer calls allow either interactive dialogue with the user, or 'silent' calls to the database. FileMan thus functions as a full-blown API (Applications Programming Interface) for the M[UMPS] programmer. Because users of the interactive, menu-driven components of Fileman are referencing the same APIs that programmers call to create custom applications, user interface and results are consistent. Is it reliable?

NEMUG Executive Board Articles for September, 1997 Internet Security, Viruses and Firewalls Our July meeting featured guest speakers Rick Hansen from Desktop Data, Inc. and Vladimir Grinmen and Stanley Weinronk who are web developers from Boston University. Rick gave a wonderful presentation on Security on the Internet. Topics covered included Architectural problems (TCP/IP was not designed to be secure). Items to worry about are viruses, unauthorized access, how to protect data integrity and availability and guarding against corporate espionage. Preventative measures start with having a company security policy and include users being careful with passwords and activities, application design, anti-virus software, firewalls, encryption, user authentication. This project began back in 1996 when a proof of concept of a secure system was mandated before the project was accepted. After many months of meetings the concept was accepted and is now in use by Facility, Students and Alumni. Respectfully Submitted by Linda Coles Members Sound Off ...

Extractions: It may be hard to get a feel for M3-Lite without actually downloading a copy of it, but here are some highlights. 3 SERVERS IN 1 First, it is really 3 servers in one. Besides serving up the ANSI Standard M Language, it also provides M database services to other software packages through ODBC or standard socket connections. Perhaps most exciting of all, it contains a complete web server, robust enough to put your Apache or MSII server out of business. And forget about CGI or various web server API's to link your database to the web you have a direct connection. SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL We hope that you will be pleasantly surprised at how small and quick it is. We have been actively fighting the "software bloat" that seems to have taken over and you will be glad to notice that it can be downloaded from our web site in just a few seconds. At only 76K, it's actually smaller than some web pages. This "smaller footprint" translates into faster startup and shutdown. With almost instantaneous startup, there is no wait. It means less code space that has to be loaded in RAM which yields more memory for disk and routine caching. NOT "LITE" ON FEATURES Finally, M3-Lite is rich in features. It comes with an SQL driver (inquiry only in M3-Lite) and the SQL dictionary tools which allows you to view your database from ODBC or HTML clients such as Crystal Reports or Microsoft Excel. Database integrity is insured by means of before image journalling. A programming shell provides a wide range of programming tools, editors and shortcuts. On-line documentation and programming examples help you get started immediately.
